When Sam McDowell had his breakthrough pitching season in 1964 with the Cleveland Indians, the sky seemed to be the limit for this 21 year old whose outstanding fastball earned him the nickname "Sudden Sam" and drew comparison to Sandy Koufax. For 8 years Sam was one of the very best pitchers in baseball while leading the American League in strikeouts 5 times. Although control was at times a problem (he also led the league in walks 5 times), Sam was great enough to still be a dominant pitcher and was a 6 time All-Star.īut on the inside, he was playing in an alcoholic fog, beset by addiction, depression, narcissism, and thoughts of suicide.
